“Environmentalists, aided by U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, are pushing what could be a half-billion-dollar plan to preserve the wetlands, reverse decades of toxic abuse, and in the process, create a model for environmental renewal. […] Within a decade, supporters say, a nature preserve 10 times the size of New York’s Central Park could take root amid the nation’s most densely populated communities. Hikers could tramp along nature trails. Canoeists would paddle the Hackensack River. Students would flock to environmental education centers.”

Excerpts from “Back From the Brink: Jersey’s Meadowlands” by Louis Jacobson, National Journal, November 15, 2003:
After a January 1997 meeting with other new Members of Congress in Washington, DC, Congressman Rothman realized that he “couldn’t think of a single natural wonder [in his Congressional District] back home” and it disturbed him greatly.
As a congressional candidate in 1996, Rothman spoke out against the Empire Tract Mall that threatened to destroy the heart of the Meadowlands: “In 1999, Rothman urged Mills to move its project closer to the existing Meadowlands stadium complex.” [After several years] “the company finally agreed to build its Xanadu complex near the stadiums and leave the Empire Tract untouched. […] The battle over the Mills project served as a catalyst for preserving the Meadowlands.”

Excerpts from “The Metamorphosis in the Meadowlands” by Mary Ellen Schoonmaker, May 18, 2007:
“Sheehan says a pivotal moment was a meeting around 2000 called by Rep. Steve Rothman, D-Fair Lawn, [while the Mills Corporation was deciding whether to heed Rothman’s demand that they abandon their plans to develop the Empire Tract] whose district includes parts of the Meadowlands. Rothman pointed to a big map of the area, where he’d drawn a black line around thousands of acres, including the Empire Tract. ‘This is what we intend to save,’ Rothman said, putting developers, their political supporters and everyone else on notice that the wetlands would be turned into a first-class environmental park–10 times the size of Central Park. Since then, Rothman has secured $10 million in federal funds to buy up parces of the future park.”
